Goals of Service Learning
- Enrich the meaning of "community college" by creating and solidifying the reality of community.
- Fill unmet needs in the community through direct service which is meaningful and necessary.
- Enable students to help others, give of themselves and enter into caring relationships.
- Assist students to see the relevance of disciplines to the world.
- Enhance students' self-esteem and confidence.
- Develop an environment of collegial participation among students, faculty and the community.
- Increase civic responsibility and bring alive the meaning of participatory democracy.
- Assist agencies to serve their clients and support the mission of the agency. In addition the program is sensitive to the needs/requests of individuals.
- Expose students to societal neglect and injustices and empower them to address these issues.
- Better prepare students for their careers and their continuing education. Service learning is a fine avenue for career exploration.
- Remind us of the truth that interconnection binds us all together.
