PVCC cannot guarantee course frequency; however, to aid in student planning, courses typically are offered as indicated below.

PHY 100 Elements of Physics (F, Sp, 4 cr)

Covers basic concepts of physics, including Newtonian mechanics, properties of matter, heat and sound, fundamental behavior of gases, ionizing radiation and fundamentals of electricity.

Prerequisite: Satisfactorily complete MTE 1-6 or appropriate placement test or BSK 9 or SAT score greater than or equal to 480 or ACT score greater than or equal to 20; corequisite: PHY 100 Lab.

Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 6 hours per week.

PHY 201 General College Physics I (F, Sp, 4 cr)

Teaches fundamental principles of physics. Covers mechanics, thermodynamics, wave phenomena, electricity and magnetism and selected topics in modern physics.

Prerequisite: Completed MTH 164 or COMPASS College Algebra score greater than or equal to 51 or SAT II score greater than or equal to 680; corequisite: PHY 201 Lab.

Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 6 hours per week.

PHY 202 General College Physics II (Sp, 4 cr)

Teaches fundamental principles of physics. Covers mechanics, thermodynamics, wave phenomena, electricity and magnetism and selected topics in modern physics. Prerequisite MTH 164 or equivalent.

Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 6 hours per week.

PHY 241 University Physics I (F, 4 cr)

Teaches principles of classical and modern physics. Includes mechanics, wave phenomena, heat, electricity, magnetism, relativity and nuclear physics. Prerequisite for PHY 241: MTH 173 or MTH 273 or divisional approval.

Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 6 hours per week.

PHY 242 University Physics II (Sp, 4 cr)

Teaches principles of classical and modern physics. Includes mechanics, wave phenomena, heat, electricity, magnetism, relativity and nuclear physics.

Prerequisite: PHY 241 and MTH 174.

Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 6 hours per week.
