NAS 131 Astronomy I (F, 4 cr)

This is an introductory astronomy course that emphasizes concepts rather than mathematics. The course is designed for non-science majors and there are no math prerequisites. The main goal of this course is for students to understand and appreciate the nature of science through the study of astronomy. After completing this class, students will have achieved basic understanding of: scientific method, patterns in the night sky, motion, energy, gravity and light, telescopes, our solar system and properties of planets beyond our solar system. Remote observatory viewing may be scheduled according to availability and time allowance.

Corequisite: NAS 131 lab.

Lecture 3 hours per week. Laboratory 3 hours per week. Total 6 hours per week.

The main goal of this course is for students to understand and appreciate the nature of science through the study of astronomy. After completing this class, students will have achieved basic understanding of: scientific method, patterns in the night sky, light and telescopes, nature of stars and galaxies, birth and death of stars, theories on beginning and end of the universe. Remote observatory viewing may be scheduled according to availability and time allowance. Lecture 3 hours per week. Laboratory 3 hours per week. Total 6 hours per week. Corequisite: NAS 132 lab.

NAS 145 Introduction to Natural History (Sp, 3 cr)

Introduces developmental concepts and principles of natural history.

Lecture 3 hours per week.

NAS 160 Field Ornithology (Sp, 3 cr)

Students will study anatomy, physiology, reproduction and taxonomy, with special attention to bird families and behavior through the use of preserved specimens, as well as live observation. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

NAS 185 Microbiology (Sp, Su, 4 cr)

Surveys microorganisms, presenting their characteristic and activities as related to health and disease.

Lecture 3 hours. Recitation and laboratory 2-3 hours. Total 5-6 hours per week.

NAS 195 Topics In Appalachian Ecology (Su, 3 cr)

A biological overview of the Appalachian Mountains, with emphasis on the Allegheny Highlands of VA/West VA, the associated plant and wildlife communities and geologic history. Through lecture and hands-on observation, participants will be exposed to a variety of forest types, wildlife species/habitats and geologic formations of the Blue Ridge, Allegheny Highlands and associated foothills. Class will include two evening lectures in Charlottesville, plus a weekend stay in Monterey, VA.

NAS 2 Foundations of Life Sciences (F, Sp, Su, 3 cr)

Presents elementary biological and chemical principles for allied health students whose high school preparation is deficient in the biological sciences.
