ENG 111 College Composition I (F, Sp, Su, 3 cr)

Develops writing ability for study, work and other areas of writing based on experience, observation, research and reading of selected literature. Guides students in learning writing as a process: understanding audience and purpose, exploring ideas and information, composing, revising and editing. Supports writing by integrating, composing, revising and editing. Supports writing by integrating experiences in thinking, reading, listening and speaking.

Prerequisite: Completed ENG 03, COMPASS 75, ASSET 42, SAT 520 or equivalent course.

Lecture 3 hours per week.

ENG 112 College Composition II (F, Sp, Su, 3 cr)

Continues to develop college writing with increased emphasis on critical essays, argumentation and research, developing these competencies through the examination of a range of texts about the human experience. Requires students to locate, evaluate, integrate and document sources and effectively edit for style and usage.

Prerequisite: Completed ENG 111.

ENG 121 Introduction to Journalism (F, Sp, 3 cr)

Introduces students to all news media, especially news gathering and preparation for print. Part 1 of 2.

Prerequisite: Completed ENG 111 or divisional approval.

ENG 122 Introduction to Journalism II (F, Sp, 3 cr)

Introduces students to all news media, especially news gathering and preparation for print.

Prerequisite: Completed ENG 121 or divisional approval.

ENG 210 Advanced Composition (F, Sp, 3 cr)

Helps students refine skills in writing non-fiction prose. Guides development of individual voice and style. Introduces procedures for publication.

Prerequisite: Completed ENG 112 or divisional approval; this course is required for dual enrollment ENG 111-112 students who wish to attend U.Va. under the articulation agreement.

ENG 211 Creative Writing I (F, Sp, 3 cr)

Introduces the student to the fundamentals of writing imaginatively. Students write in forms to be selected from poetry, fiction, drama and essays.

Prerequisite: Completed ENG 112 or divisional approval.

ENG 241 Survey of American Literature I (F, Sp, 3 cr)

Examines American literary works from Colonial times to the present, emphasizing the ideas and characteristics of our national literature. Involves critical reading and writing.

Prerequisite: Completed ENG 112 or divisional approval.

ENG 242 Survey of American Literature II (Sp, 3 cr)

Examines American literary works from Colonial times to the present, emphasizing the ideas and characteristics of our national literature. Involves critical reading and writing.

ENG 243 Survey of English Literature (F, Sp, Su, 3 cr)

Studies major English works from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present, emphasizing ideas and characteristics of the British literary tradition. Involves critical reading and writing.

Prerequisite: Completed ENG 112 or divisional approval.

ENG 244 Survey of English Literature II (Sp, 3 cr)

Studies major English works from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present, emphasizing ideas and characteristics of the British literary tradition. Involves critical reading and writing.

Prerequisite: Completed ENG 112 or divisional approval.

ENG 247 Survey of Popular Culture (F, 3 cr)

Analyzes familiar aspects of American culture, as seen through popular literature, with additional emphasis on television, film and popular art.

Surveys the history, development and genres of children's literature, focusing on analysis of texts for literary qualities and in terms of audience.

Examines major works of world literature. Involves critical reading and writing.

Prerequisite: Completed ENG 112 or divisional approval; satisfies U.Va. non-western requirement.

Examines major works of world literature. Involves critical reading and writing.

Examines selected works by Black American writers from the colonial period to the present. Involves critical reading and writing.

Prerequisite: Completed ENG 112; satisfies U.Va. Non-Western Studies Requirement.

ENG 254 Survey of Afro/American Lit II (Sp, Su, 3 cr)

Examines selected works by Black American writers from the colonial period to the present. Involves critical reading and writing.
