Reading of 8 Coming to PVCC
Charlottesville, VA - Piedmont Virginia Community College and Richmond Triangle Players present a one-night-only reading of 8, a play chronicling the historic trial of the Federal District Court to overturn Proposition 8, California's anti-gay marriage legislation, on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Stage Theatre of the V. Earl Dickinson Building. The public is invited free of charge. Tickets are required.
The story for 8 is framed by the trial's historic closing arguments but features the best testimony from both sides of the issue. Written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, best known for his work on the films Milk and J. Edgar, 8 is based on the actual words of the trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families. The stage reading at PVCC will be followed by a talkback where cast and audience members can discuss the issues presented in the groundbreaking trial.
"PVCC is excited to partner with the Richmond Triangle Players to augment our fine arts season programming," said John Donnelly, PVCC vice president for instruction and student services. "We are proud to join the many other colleges and universities who have hosted the reading of the play "8" which chronicles events surrounding the overturning of California's Proposition 8. This collaboration with Richmond Triangle players will provide the PVCC community with the opportunity to engage in dialogue and discussion about this significant event in our social history."
Throughout 2012, the American Foundation for Equal Rights and Broadway Impact licensed 8 free to colleges and community theatres nationwide in order to spur action, dialogue and understanding. The reading at PVCC is directed by Richmond Triangle Players' Artistic Director John Knapp, and features notable actors from the region.
Tickets are available at no charge from the PVCC Box office up to two hours before curtain time on the day of the show. Call the PVCC Box Office at 434.961.5376 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
