Washington Balalaika Society Orchestra
Performs Sept. 30
Charlottesville, VA - Piedmont Virginia Community College will host the Washington Balalaika Society Orchestra Sunday, Sept. 30, at 3 p.m. in the Main Stage Theatre of the V. Earl Dickinson Building. Tickets to the event are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students.
The Washington Balalaika Society is a community-based organization dedicated to studying, preserving and performing the rich musical heritage of Russia and Eastern Europe on authentic and traditional folk instruments such as the balalaika, domra, bayan and related wind and percussion instruments. Their music replicates the folk orchestra sounds typically found in major cities and towns of Russia.
Featured members of the WBS Orchestra include conductor and artistic director Svetlana Nikonova, who graduated from one of Russia's preeminent conservatories, and Andrei Saveliev, a virtuoso balalaika soloist. The orchestra has performed at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Smithsonian Institution, Embassy of the Russian Federation, Constitution Hall and numerous other venues.
Tickets are available by calling the PVCC Box Office at 434.961.5376 and charging them to a VISA or MasterCard, or by purchasing them at Plan 9 Music, Sidetracks, University of Virginia Arts Box Office, Greenberry's Coffee (Barracks Road Shopping Center) and the PVCC Cashier's Office during normal business hours. Tickets can also be purchased at the PVCC Box Office window two hours before the performance.
The Dickinson Building is located at the south end of College Drive, and ample, free parking is located in front of the building. The Main Stage Theatre offers comfortable and spacious seating and is wheelchair and stroller accessible. All ages are welcome.
