Faculty members or students at off-campus sites may have materials, including books owned by the library and interlibrary loans, sent to the site via courier.
Computer Use in the Library
The primary purpose for having computers in the library is to assist students with research related to their coursework at the College. At times when the demand for computers exceeds availability, priority will be as follows:
- Currently-enrolled students, faculty and staff engaged in research for coursework or business of the College.
- Currently-enrolled students, faculty and staff conducting research not related to coursework.
- Community members engaged in research.
The library enforces these priorities by limiting computer time to 30 minutes, restricting use to persons with higher priority or restricting activities not related to research. Any other use of computers must be approved in advance by the library staff.
Patrons should understand and abide by the provisions of the College's Computer Use Policy, the PVCC Computing Handbook and the VCCS Computer Ethics Agreement. Some important policies include the prohibition of online chat groups, excessive or irrelevant Internet usage, online gaming and using or copying software in violation of license agreement or copyright. Please read the online manuals for additional information:
Laptop Computers
Currently-enrolled PVCC Students may check out laptop computers for use in the library on a first-come, first-served basis. All laptops have wireless Internet access and print materials to the photocopier. Please do not leave laptops unattended in the library. In the event of loss or damage to a laptop computer, the borrower will be charged the original cost or actual cost of a comparable item. Laptops must be checked in 30 minutes before closing.
Group Study Rooms
There are six rooms available for group study. To reserve a room, sign up in the notebook at the circulation desk.
The six group study rooms are primarily for student groups to use. Groups may sign up in advance at the circulation desk to reserve a room for up to 3 hours. Please limit group use to 9 hours per week. Individuals may use a room if vacant, but groups take priority. Individuals may only reserve a room for class-related recordings or similar activities.

Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary loan is a service providing access to coursework-related materials that are not available in the Jessup Library. Through interlibrary loan, patrons may borrow books and acquire photocopies of journal articles from other libraries in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States.
Faculty, staff and PVCC degree-program students, including Mary Baldwin, ODU and other distance education students, may use this service within the limits and guidelines of the interlibrary loan code, copyright code and the lending policies of each library. Community members should use the interlibrary loan services at the Jefferson Madison Regional Library in Charlottesville.
Students may request up to three books at a time and cannot order additional titles until the previous transactions are complete. Books published during the current year, course textbooks and other materials used as texts are not available for loan. Students may request up to six periodical articles at a time and cannot request additional articles until all previous transactions are complete.
The borrower is responsible for returning all books to the Jessup Library. If a book is damaged or lost, the borrower is responsible for all fees charged by the lending library. If the borrower fails to pay the fines, PVCC will suspend interlibrary loan privileges and place a hold on the student's record.
The requested material will be mailed to the borrower if he/she lives outside the service area. (The service area includes the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson, the northern part of Buckingham County and the City of Charlottesville.) Books must be returned in the postage-paid return mailers, but photocopies may be kept. If the borrower attends classes at the main campus, he/she will receive a call or email when the material is ready for pick up. Students at off-campus sites can have the materials sent to the site via courier.

Library Privileges
PVCC students use their student ID number or MyPVCC username to check out library materials. PVCC faculty, staff and students are not issued a physical library card. Virginia residents, ages 16 and older, may obtain a library record valid for use in the Jessup Library. To create an account, bring an official photo identification, such as a driver's license, to the circulation desk.
Please note that community members may borrow most library materials; use of reserve materials is prohibited.
Operational Policies
Cell Phones
Cell phones must be turned off at all times. If it is necessary to make or receive a call, please find an appropriate area outside of the library.
Food and Drink
Patrons may bring food and drink into the library. Open containers are not permitted in the computer area.
Noise
In the interest of maintaining an atmosphere conducive to study and research, excessive noise is prohibited, especially in the computer area. Students who need to work together should reserve a group study room.
Overdue or Lost Materials
Students and community members with library materials not returned within 10 business days of the last overdue notice will be turned over to the Business Office for collection. A hold also is placed on the records of students with overdue materials; this prevents students from receiving transcripts and registering for classes in subsequent semesters.
Faculty and staff members must return all library materials or pay replacement costs for lost materials prior to leaving the employ of the College.
Any borrower who loses or damages library material will be charged the actual cost to replace it. If a book is no longer in print, there is a minimum charge of $50.
Photocopiers
The copy machines accept coins or dollar bills and give change. Copies cost five cents per side for black-and-white and 25 cents per side for color. Both photocopiers default to black-and-white, double-sided.
Off-campus Instructions
Currently-enrolled students, faculty and staff have access to the library's databases from off campus. Users will be required to log in with their MyPVCC username and password.
For additional information, please click here.
Request New Materials
The library staff encourages patrons to recommend print and non-print materials for purchase by the library. Please submit all recommendations to the Coordinator of Library Services. Email Linda Cahill or call 434.961.5304.
Reserve
Faculty members may place books, folders and videos on reserve for their classes. Reserve items are kept at the circulation desk and may be checked out for use in the library. There is a two-hour time limit. The library does not renew or accept hold requests for reserve items. A link to the course reserve catalog is available through the PVCC Jessup Library Catalog.
