Piedmont Virginia Community College is accepting applications for a nine-month faculty position to teach studio art and graphic design courses and to coordinate the Graphic Design Certificate program. Employment will begin August 16, 2014. This position is a nine-month faculty appointment with a teaching load of 15 credits per semester, which may include day, evening and weekend sections, on- and off-campus sections, and distance learning sections.
In addition to the job functions noted above, essential job functions of full-time faculty include: Holding 10 office hours weekly, preparing and distributing a syllabus to all students consistent with the course of study for each course taught, preparing grade reports for each course taught, assist in the requisition of currenttexts, adequate instructional equipment and supplies, hardware and software specific to the discipline, regularly reviewing library collection within faculty discipline, and evaluating course instruction in accordance with established policy. They will also oversee the design students' internships.
Full-time faculty also advise students in course selection and curricular requirements, maintain attendance records and confer with students who display excessive absenteeism or an inclination to withdraw from a course, confer with students who display poor academic performance, participate when applicable and practical in co-curricular activities, prepare and follow an Individual Development and Performance Plan (IDPP), and maintain a positive, professional relationship with colleagues, supervisors, students, and the community.
Full-time faculty are expected to participate in faculty and curriculum meetings, attend faculty workshops, assist with registration, prepare textbook orders, assist in maintaining an up-to-date inventory of equipment assigned for use in instruction, work with colleagues to promote retention of students, incorporate current and emerging instructional technologies into classroom instruction, work with colleagues to secure external financial and/or physical resources (e.g., grant writing, equipment), adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations of the college and the Virginia Community College system, and perform other related duties as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to teaching, all faculty members advise students, serve on division and college-wide committees, and participate in other activities that support the mission of the college. Such activities may include, but are not limited to: institutional effectiveness activities, club sponsorship, student recruitment, course and program development and evaluation, community service, and mentoring new and part-time faculty. Faculty members are expected to maintain currency in their teaching disciplines and in trends in community college education.
The successful candidate will have Master's degree in fine arts (MFA) with significant teaching experience in both fine arts and graphic design. They will show commitment to the community college mission and philosophy and possess the ability to use current and emerging instructional technologies. They will have leadership qualities and the vision to build and expand the Graphic Design Program.

The preferred candidate will have a Master's degree in fine arts (MFA) with studio and graphics coursework, experience with ADOBE Creative Suite, teaching experience in the community college setting and prior experience with teaching college level visual arts and computer-based graphics courses. They will have real-world experience as a graphic designer, knowledge of web design and interactive design programs. The successful candidate will have leadership qualities and the experience and vision to build and expand the Graphic Design Program.
